Snake vs Hydro Jetting Decision Tool
Use this free tool to compare mechanical drain clearing with hydro jetting based on the type of clog, whether the problem keeps returning, suspected grease or scale, root concerns, pipe condition, and whether previous snaking worked.
Neither method is automatically “better.” A cable or rooter may be enough for some localized blockages, while hydro jetting can make more sense for heavy buildup in suitable piping. If pipe condition is uncertain, diagnosis may need to come first.
When a Drain Snake or Rooter May Be Enough
Mechanical clearing is often a sensible first step for a localized or first-time clog where the main goal is to open the line and restore flow. It can also be useful for cutting through certain obstructions.
When Hydro Jetting May Make More Sense
Hydro jetting becomes more relevant when the problem involves heavy grease, sludge, scale, recurring buildup, commercial use, or a line that has repeatedly been opened but continues to clog. It uses high-pressure water to clean more of the pipe interior than a cable alone.
When You Should Diagnose Before Choosing
If the line may be cracked, collapsed, offset, fragile, or repeatedly affected by roots, a sewer camera inspection may be more useful than choosing a cleaning method first.
